Wicked Quotes Motorbike Insurance Review

Wicked Quotes sells one thing, motorcycle insurance, and it has sold it under that name for more than fifteen years from an office at 28 Station Close in Potters Bar. The quote form is about as short as they come: nine questions, no name and no phone number required, and a rough price on screen before you have given anything away. Sales lines are open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday on 0344 8800 962, and the staff answering them are described as riders themselves.
The firm behind the brand has rather more history than the name suggests. Wicked Quotes is a trading name of Novitas Underwriting Agency Limited, company 03106533, incorporated on 26 September 1995 and trading since 1996. Novitas is an underwriting agency rather than a high-street broker: it holds authority to price and arrange cover on insurers' behalf, and describes itself as acting for “a number of market leading UK insurers including Aviva and Markerstudy”. Its own published product assessment maps its motorcycle schemes to Aviva and AXA. For a rider, that is the part worth knowing — the paper behind the policy comes from large, familiar names.
Novitas also supplies more than 150 brokers and intermediaries across the UK, so the same underwriting may well sit behind quotes you have been given elsewhere. Cover runs from third party only through third party fire and theft to comprehensive, with separate routes for modified bikes, high-value machines, multi-bike households and couriers, food delivery excepted. The firm is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under firm reference 307931, which anyone can check on the FCA Register.

Nine questions and a price on screen
The Quick-Quote form asks for the bike's make, model and registration, the licence you hold and how long you have held it, your no-claims years, postcode, date of birth, whether the bike is garaged, its value and what you use it for. Email is optional. The site promises a quote in about 30 seconds and is honest that what comes back is “a simple rough estimate” built on stated assumptions, with a fuller quote behind it. That is a genuinely low-friction way to find out whether a specialist is even in the right ballpark before you start handing over personal details to comparison sites.
The site also sets out six levers it will price against: no-claims bonus, agreeing a mileage limit, garaging the bike, fitting extra security, dropping pillion cover and holding an advanced riding qualification. Two of those are worth thinking about before you accept the cheapest number. The mileage endorsements in the policy wording are hard cut-offs rather than sliding scales — endorsement J voids cover for any accident, loss or damage once the bike has passed 5,000 miles in the year, and endorsement L does the same at 3,000 miles. If you agree to one of those to shave the premium, the odometer becomes part of your contract.
Who actually carries the risk
An underwriting agency sits between you and the insurer. Novitas designs the product, sets the price within limits agreed with the insurer, binds the cover and handles much of the administration; the insurer supplies the capital that pays claims. Its published fair value assessment of 25 August 2023 names six schemes and, unusually, says which insurer stands behind each: Novitas Standard on Aviva paper, and Novitas Select, Novitas Bike and Novitas Basic on AXA. Two further schemes, Novitas Bikmarque and Novitas Palamon, are recorded as being in run-off with West Bay, meaning closed to new business and simply seeing out the policies already written. The assessment describes Novitas and the insurer as co-manufacturers of the product, which is the regulator's language for shared responsibility.
The corporate trail is straightforward enough to follow. The company was incorporated on 26 September 1995 as Whittington Underwriting Agency PLC, took the Novitas name on 28 February 1997, and converted from a plc to a limited company on 17 September 2015. Since 30 June 2016 it has been controlled by Daly Holdings Limited, which holds 75% or more of both the shares and the voting rights. Its registered office is 167 Turners Hill, Cheshunt EN8 9BH, while the working address on every customer-facing page is Potters Bar. Older policy paperwork also points to Lloyd's, and the complaints procedure still carries a separate escalation route for policyholders whose cover sits with a Lloyd's syndicate, so ask which insurer your own certificate names.
What the wording pays, and the conditions attached
The liability limits are generous and worth setting against the legal floor. The policy caps damage to other people's property at £20,000,000 for any one occurrence, with a further £5,000,000 for claimants' costs and expenses. The Road Traffic Act only obliges an insurer to provide £1,200,000 of third party property cover, so this is well beyond the minimum. There is also up to £5,000 towards legal representation if you face proceedings for manslaughter or dangerous riding arising from an accident.
Damage to your own bike is settled at market value at the time of loss, capped at the value you last declared — which makes keeping that figure current your job, not the insurer's, on a machine that has been rebuilt or has appreciated. Permanently fitted accessories are limited to £100 for any one claim unless separately declared. Riding another person's motorcycle, where that extension applies at all, gives you third party cover only; nothing pays for damage to the borrowed bike.
Theft cover carries the sharpest condition on the page, and the wording capitalises it: a secondary security device such as a D-lock, disc lock, chain and padlock or immobiliser is compulsory, and theft while the bike is unattended and unprotected by one is excluded outright. Leaving the bike also means removing the ignition keys and setting whatever security is fitted. Track days, competitions, rallies, trials, performance tests and speed trials are all excluded, as is food delivery work. European riding is capped at 30 days in any one trip and 90 days in total across the year, over the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Republic of Ireland and 31 listed European countries, and needs telling in advance.
The fees, and what they do to a small premium
This is where a rider should slow down. The terms of business set out a charge of “£150 for setting up or renewing an insurance policy on selected products”, £50 for a mid-term adjustment whether temporary or permanent, £50 for any cancellation per policy, and £5 for duplicate documents. A £150 arrangement fee is at the very top of the range charged by UK insurance intermediaries, and it is charged again at renewal on the products it applies to. The wording “on selected products” is doing a lot of work and the site does not say which ones, so the only way to know what your quote carries is to ask before you pay.
Scale it against a premium. The ABI's motor premium tracker put the average private car policy at £566 in the second quarter of 2026, up £6 on the quarter and £14 on the year in cash terms though £14 lower once inflation is taken out. Motorcycle premiums are not tracked separately in that release, and a commuter bike or a small scooter frequently costs a good deal less than a car to insure. On a policy in the low hundreds, a £150 fee is not an administrative detail; it is a material part of what leaves your account, and it is not the bit that pays claims.
Two further wrinkles. There is a 14-day cooling-off period, but a refund is net of the insurer's charge and the firm's own fee, and after 14 days Novitas keeps its commission on any return premium; if a claim has been made in the policy year there may be no refund at all. And the policy wording itself carries a separate £25 administration charge plus insurance premium tax, along with a £15 charge for cancelling inside the cooling-off period. That wording dates from May 2018 and the terms of business are current, so the larger figures are the ones to work from — but the overlap is confusing enough that it is worth having the total spelled out before you commit.
The paperwork is published, just not on this site
Wicked Quotes does not publish a policy wording, an insurance product information document or a specimen schedule anywhere a shopper can find them before buying. Novitas does, on its own trade-facing site, and the two are the same company — so the documents exist and are free; they are simply on the other brand. Its legal page carries the motorcycle wordings before and after May 2018, the IPID, a target market statement and the fair value assessment. Anyone taking a quote from Wicked Quotes should read them there first, because that is the paperwork they will be sold.
The dates on those documents are less reassuring than their existence. The IPID is referenced 01/01/2018 and the current wording is version 2.01 of May 2018, both now more than eight years old. The fair value assessment is dated 25 August 2023 and states in terms that “the next FVA will be conducted within the next 12 months”; no later version is published, which leaves the visible assessment two years past its own stated review date. Its conclusion is that the core range “does provide fair value to customers”, while flagging concerns about add-on products, fees and the effect of premium finance — the assessment is candid that Novitas neither supplies the add-ons nor sets their selling price, which means the extras you are offered at the quote stage are priced by somebody else.
How bike cover looks in the official figures
No independent rating of Wicked Quotes could be verified: there is no Defaqto award on the site, no entry on the consumer rating panels that cover most brokers, and the firm is too small to appear in regulatory data under its own name. The claim on the homepage to be “one of the UK's largest independent motorbike insurance providers” is not one an outsider can check.
The sector-wide numbers do give a frame. The Financial Ombudsman Service's annual data, published on 21 May 2026, records 13,420 new complaints about car and motorcycle insurance at a 35% uphold rate, against 214,600 complaints and a 30% average across every financial product it covers. Motor sits above the average, and the gap is mostly about how claims are handled rather than how policies are sold. The FCA's general insurance value measures data of 21 July 2026 shows motor claims acceptance at 99% and claims costs at 59% of premium for 2025, up from 54%; motorcycle is not broken out separately in that release, so there is no bike-specific acceptance rate to quote and anyone offering you one is borrowing the car figure.
The market itself is growing. Motorcycle Industry Association registrations were 13% up in June 2026 against the same month a year earlier and 15.2% up year to date, with adventure bikes 23.8% ahead for the year and modern classics 23.1% up in the month. More bikes on the road tends to mean more competition for the business, which is an argument for taking two or three quotes rather than one.
Complaining, and who stands behind the policy
The complaints procedure is clear and the timescales are written down. Complaints go to the Potters Bar office in writing, by email, or by telephone on 01707 708262; an acknowledgement follows within five business days, with an aim to resolve on the spot or within three business days where possible, and a response within eight weeks at the outside. After that, or after a final response, you have six months to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service on 0800 023 4567. Eligibility extends beyond private customers to micro-enterprises, charities with income under £6.5m, trusts with net assets under £5m, buy-to-let customers and small businesses under £6.5m turnover. Where the cover sits with a Lloyd's syndicate there is a parallel route to Lloyd's own complaints team.
On money, the terms of business say premiums are held in a trust account as agents of the insurers, which is the arrangement that protects your money if the firm fails before passing the premium on. They also confirm Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection applies, though the percentage differs by type of business and the exact level for your policy is worth confirming with the firm. Claims are reported to Wicked Quotes on 0344 8800 967 rather than direct to an insurer, and the site says your insurer, solicitor and repairer are instructed from there; no approved repairer network or courtesy bike arrangement is described.
Where it wins
- Nine-question quick quote gives an indicative price in about 30 seconds without asking for your name or number
- Underwriting sits with Aviva and AXA on the current schemes, named openly in the firm's own fair value assessment
- £20,000,000 third party property limit and £5,000,000 for claimants' costs, far above the £1,200,000 legal minimum
- Genuine specialism in modified, high-value, multi-bike and courier risks that mainstream insurers price badly or decline
- Policy wording, IPID, target market statement and fair value assessment are all published free on the Novitas site
- Complaints timescales are spelled out, with a five business day acknowledgement and a named phone line
Where it falls short
- A fee of up to £150 to set up or renew, charged again each year, with no list of which products it applies to
- £50 to make any mid-term change and £50 to cancel, on top of whatever the insurer charges
- No policy wording, IPID or specimen schedule published on the Wicked Quotes site itself — you have to know to look on the Novitas site
- The current wording and IPID both date from 2018, and the published fair value assessment is two years past its own stated review date
- Theft cover is void if the bike is left unattended without a secondary security device, and mileage endorsements cut off cover outright at 3,000 or 5,000 miles
- No verifiable independent rating, and the claim to be one of the UK's largest independent bike providers cannot be checked from outside
Common questions
Who underwrites a Wicked Quotes policy?
Wicked Quotes is a trading name of Novitas Underwriting Agency Limited, which arranges cover on insurers' behalf rather than carrying the risk itself. Its 25 August 2023 fair value assessment places the Novitas Standard scheme with Aviva and the Select, Bike and Basic schemes with AXA; two older schemes sit in run-off with West Bay. The insurer that applies to you is named on your certificate of motor insurance, so check it there.
What fees does Wicked Quotes charge?
The published terms of business list up to £150 for setting up or renewing a policy on selected products, £50 for any mid-term adjustment, £50 for cancelling, and £5 for duplicate documents. Commission from the insurer is taken on top. The firm does not say which products attract the £150, so ask for the fee in writing with your quote.
Do I have to fit a lock for theft cover?
Yes. The policy wording states in capitals that a secondary security device — a D-lock, disc lock, chain and padlock, immobiliser or similar — is compulsory, and theft of a bike left unattended without one is excluded. Leaving the bike also means removing the ignition keys and activating any fitted security.
Can I ride in Europe on the policy?
Cover extends to the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Republic of Ireland and 31 listed European countries, but foreign use is capped at 30 days in any one trip and 90 days across the year, and needs to be notified in advance. Longer touring needs a different arrangement.
Where do I find the policy documents before buying?
Not on the Wicked Quotes site, which publishes none of them. The same company's Novitas site carries the motorcycle wordings from before and after May 2018, the insurance product information document, a target market statement and the fair value assessment, all as free downloads. Read those before you pay.
How do I complain, and how long does it take?
Complaints go to the Potters Bar office on 01707 708262, by email or in writing. You should get an acknowledgement within five business days and a response within eight weeks; the firm aims to settle straightforward cases within three business days. If you are still unhappy, you have six months from the final response to refer it to the Financial Ombudsman Service on 0800 023 4567.
Our verdict
Wicked Quotes is a specialist worth a quote if your bike is modified, valuable, one of several, or used for courier work, and the underwriting behind it is better than the modest branding suggests — Aviva and AXA paper, arranged by a firm that has been doing this since 1996 and supplies 150 other brokers. The liability limits are strong and the quick quote costs you nothing to try. The reservation is the fee schedule: up to £150 to arrange or renew, £50 to change anything and £50 to cancel are large numbers against a typical bike premium, and they are easy to miss until the paperwork arrives. Ask what fee your quote carries and read the Novitas wording before you buy, and you will know exactly what you are getting.
