AA Breakdown Cover Review

The AA has been going since 1905 and is, on any measure of size, the biggest breakdown operation in the country. The membership is sold by Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited from Level 3, Plant, Basing View, Basingstoke, under Financial Conduct Authority firm reference 310562. Its annual report for the year to 31 January 2026 counts 2,753 patrols on the payroll, 3.5 million breakdowns attended and 3.3 million paid personal roadside members, which the company puts at more than 40% of the consumer market.
Those patrols are the reason to pay the AA rather than a cheaper name. They are employed directly rather than subcontracted, and the AA's own service data for 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 has them repairing 8 in 10 cars at the roadside instead of towing them, arriving inside the hour and getting most drivers moving again in around 30 minutes. Every patrol holds the Level 1 electric vehicle awareness qualification and more than 98% hold Level 2, which matters more each year. Defaqto gives the AA a 5 Star expert rating where Roadside Assistance is bought together with National Recovery, At Home and Onward Travel.
Price is where the AA has become more competitive than its reputation suggests. Between 1 April and 30 June 2026, 10% of new customers paid £5.49 a month for vehicle-based Roadside Assistance. A 40% discount runs online until 31 August 2026 on any package that includes At Home, National Recovery or Onward Travel, applied to the first year for new customers.

Four blocks of cover, and the point at which each one stops
Roadside Assistance is the base. A patrol attends anywhere in the UK more than a quarter of a mile from the address on your membership, and call-outs are unlimited. Parts worth up to £5 are fitted free; anything dearer is charged. At Home closes the quarter-mile gap, covering the registered address and the surrounding quarter of a mile, with recovery to a nearby garage if the car cannot be fixed on the drive.
National Recovery takes the driver, the vehicle and up to seven passengers to any single destination in the UK when a roadside repair is not possible. Onward Travel deals with the rest of the day: a mid-range saloon or hatchback hire car for up to 72 hours, or one night of bed and breakfast at a hotel the AA picks, or the cost of a train, bus or coach for the driver and seven passengers to where they were going. Taxis are not paid for, and Onward Travel is limited to three claims in any one membership year.
Three add-ons sit outside the recovery service. Parts and Garage Cover pays up to £535 per claim towards parts, labour and VAT with a £35 excess, after a 14-day wait, capped at five paid claims in 12 months (six on multi-vehicle joint or family membership). Tyre Cover pays up to £160 per tyre. Key Cover is sold separately and also carries a 14-day wait. Any vehicle on the policy must be under 3.5 tonnes, no more than 2.55 metres wide and 7 metres long — petrol, diesel, electric or hydrogen, of any age, including vans, minibuses, motorhomes and motorcycles.
Buying it round the person instead of the car
The choice that changes the price most is not the tier but the basis. Vehicle cover attaches to one registration and travels with the car whoever is driving it. Personal cover attaches to you and works in any eligible vehicle, as driver or as passenger, which is the version worth paying for if you regularly drive a partner's car, a parent's car or a borrowed one.
Personal membership can be taken for one person, extended to a second on joint cover, or stretched to three further household members — all of whom must live at the same address. A hire car is covered only with the rental company's permission, and a fleet of three or more vehicles has to move to the AA's commercial product rather than sit on a personal membership.
Who is actually standing behind each promise
One membership number hides five companies. Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited, firm reference 310562, arranges everything. The recovery services themselves — Roadside, At Home and National Recovery — come from Automobile Association Developments Limited, trading as AA Breakdown Services, with AA Underwriting Insurance Company Limited providing part of the Roadside element. Onward Travel and Parts and Garage Cover are insurance policies underwritten by Acromas Insurance Company Limited, authorised by the Financial Services Commission in Gibraltar and operating from a UK branch at Enbrook Park, Sandgate, Folkestone. Tyre Cover is underwritten by Astrenska Insurance Limited, trading as Collinson Insurance.
The group behind them was taken off the London market in a buyout completed on 29 March 2021 by TowerBrook Capital Partners and Warburg Pincus, with Stonepeak joining as an investor in December 2023. The accounts for the year to 31 January 2026 show revenue of £1,505m, adjusted EBITDA of £481m and net debt of £1,906m, with average income per member reported at around £200. A debt pile close to four times earnings is not a reason to avoid the AA, but it is the commercial pressure that sits behind renewal pricing, and it is a matter of public record rather than speculation.
The Ombudsman cannot look at most of what you have bought
This is the part of AA membership least understood by the people buying it, and it is not the AA's invention — it follows from the fact that a recovery service is a service contract, not a contract of insurance. The Financial Ombudsman Service says so on its own site: "We can't look into every complaint we get because of the way breakdown cover is regulated. Some businesses may carry out unregulated services and we can only look at complaints about services that are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority." It then names the products it cannot review — policy pricing, call-outs, roadside repairs and vehicle recovery — and adds, in terms: "We can't look into complaints about these issues if you're with AA, RAC or some other smaller providers."
What remains inside the Ombudsman's reach is the insured part: onward travel, repairs at a garage, overnight accommodation and incidents in Europe. So a dispute over a £535 Parts and Garage claim or an unpaid hotel bill has a free, independent route of appeal. A dispute about a patrol taking four hours, or a recovery refused as a recurring fault, or the price you were charged, does not. Complain to the AA, and if that fails the remaining options are the courts or your card provider. Anyone choosing between providers on the strength of an ombudsman backstop should know that on the headline service the backstop is not there, for the AA or for its main rivals.
Year two is where the real price lives
The 40% sale discount is explicit about its limits: online only, until 31 August 2026, new customers, first year, and only on packages that include At Home, National Recovery or Onward Travel. Roadside Assistance on its own, Parts and Garage Cover, Key Cover, Tyre Cover and Commercial Use are all excluded from it. Whatever you pay in year one, year two starts from an undiscounted base.
Ordinarily a renewing customer would be protected by the FCA's pricing rules, which since 1 January 2022 have required that a renewal quote is no higher than the price the same customer would be given as a new customer through the same channel. Those rules are written for home and motor insurance. Standalone breakdown cover is neither, so the equal-pricing protection does not apply to it, and neither does the Ombudsman — as above, pricing is one of the things it cannot examine. The practical protection is the notice period: annual members get a renewal notice before the second year begins, and monthly members must be told of a payment change at least 45 days in advance. Both are worth diarising, because on this product the only person checking the renewal price against a new-customer quote is you.
Charges and conditions that catch people out
Most cover cannot be used until 24 hours after purchase, so it is no use buying it at the roadside; Parts and Garage Cover and Key Cover need 14 days. A fault that recurs within 28 days is not covered unless the car went to a garage for permanent repair and you can show evidence of it, and repeated claims for the same problem may push the premium up. Misfuelling is not a breakdown: the AA offers a Fuel Assist service you pay for. Lost keys are the same story — locksmith costs are excluded unless Key Cover is on the policy. Breakdowns involving the emergency services after an accident, and routine maintenance, sit outside the membership altogether.
Parts and Garage Cover excludes service items, body panels, glass, keys, air conditioning unless its failure caused the breakdown, pre-existing faults, contaminated fuel damage and wear items including brake pads and clutch friction surfaces — which between them account for a good share of what actually fails on an older car. On the administrative side there is a £20 adjustment fee to cancel an unused annual policy inside the 14-day cooling-off period, 30 days' notice to come off continuous cover, £2 for a replacement card and £15 for a written VAT notification.
Where it wins
- 2,753 directly employed patrols, the largest force in the UK, attending 3.5 million breakdowns a year
- 8 in 10 cars repaired at the roadside on the AA's own April 2025 to March 2026 data, with a target of arriving inside the hour
- Unlimited call-outs on every tier, with no annual cap on the number of attendances
- Defaqto 5 Star expert rating on Roadside with National Recovery, At Home and Onward Travel
- Personal cover follows you into any eligible vehicle as driver or passenger, and can carry three extra household members
- Every patrol trained to Level 1 for electric vehicles and more than 98% to Level 2
- No upper age limit on the vehicle, and vans, motorhomes, minibuses and motorcycles all qualify within the weight and size limits
Where it falls short
- The Financial Ombudsman Service states it cannot investigate complaints about call-outs, roadside repairs, vehicle recovery or policy pricing for AA members, because those services sit outside FCA regulation — only onward travel, garage repairs, accommodation and European incidents are within its reach
- The FCA's equal-pricing rule for renewals covers home and motor insurance, not standalone breakdown cover, so nothing obliges the AA to match its new-customer price at renewal
- The 40% discount is first-year and new-customer only, excludes Roadside-only membership and every add-on, and ends 31 August 2026
- A fault that returns within 28 days is not covered without documented evidence of a permanent garage repair, which puts the burden of proof on the member
- Parts and Garage Cover pays a maximum of £535 per claim with a £35 excess and excludes wear items such as brake pads and clutch friction surfaces — much of what fails on a high-mileage car
- Onward Travel is capped at three claims a year, one night's accommodation and 72 hours of hire car, and taxis are never paid for
- Cancelling an unused annual policy in the cooling-off period still costs a £20 adjustment fee, and continuous cover needs 30 days' notice to stop
Common questions
How soon can I use AA cover after buying it?
Most of the membership becomes usable 24 hours after purchase, so it cannot be bought at the side of the road to deal with a breakdown already in progress. Parts and Garage Cover and Key Cover both carry a longer 14-day wait before a claim can be made.
Does the AA cover a breakdown on my own driveway?
Only with At Home added. Standard Roadside Assistance excludes breakdowns at the registered address and within the surrounding quarter of a mile. At Home covers that area and will recover the vehicle to a nearby garage if it cannot be repaired where it sits.
Can I take a complaint about a slow patrol to the Financial Ombudsman?
No. The Ombudsman's own guidance says it cannot look into complaints about call-outs, roadside repairs, vehicle recovery or policy pricing where the provider is the AA or the RAC, because those services are not regulated by the FCA. It can consider complaints about onward travel, repairs carried out at a garage, overnight accommodation and incidents in Europe.
What does Onward Travel actually pay for?
One of three things, arranged by the AA rather than chosen by you: a mid-range saloon or hatchback hire car for up to 72 hours, one night's bed and breakfast at a hotel of the AA's choosing, or public transport for the driver and up to seven passengers to the intended destination. Taxis are excluded, and the benefit is limited to three claims in a membership year.
Will my price go up at renewal?
It can. Any introductory discount applies to the first year for new customers only, and the FCA rule requiring renewal prices to match new-customer prices applies to home and motor insurance rather than standalone breakdown cover. Annual members receive a renewal notice, and monthly members must be given at least 45 days' notice of a change to payments — both are the moment to compare against a fresh quote.
Which vehicles can go on the policy?
Petrol, diesel, electric and hydrogen cars of any age, plus vans, minibuses, motorhomes and motorcycles, provided each is under 3.5 tonnes gross weight, no more than 2.55 metres wide excluding mirrors and no more than 7 metres long. A caravan or trailer being towed at the time is covered within the same limits.
Our verdict
If what you want is the best chance of being fixed where you stand rather than towed to a garage, the AA is the strongest argument in the market: 2,753 of its own patrols, 3.5 million attendances a year and 8 in 10 cars repaired at the roadside. Bought in a sale with At Home and National Recovery attached, the first year is competitive with providers running a fraction of that capacity. The reservations are about what happens afterwards rather than what happens at the roadside — the discount is first-year only, the renewal price is not governed by the FCA rule that protects home and motor customers, and the Ombudsman cannot examine a dispute about a call-out, a recovery or a price. Treat it as a service you re-shop every year and it is very good value. Treat it as a subscription you never look at again and it will quietly cost you more than it should.
