John Lewis has sold home insurance under the Partnership name for a long time, and in March 2026 it changed how. John Lewis Finance Limited became a regulated insurance broker rather than the front for a single insurer, and household quotes are now run across a panel: AXA, Covéa Insurance and Prestige Underwriting from April 2026, with Ageas added on 23 June 2026. The money business behind it reports 1.4 million active customers and £1.5 billion of customer spending across John Lewis and Waitrose in the past year.

At the top of the range the cover is unusually generous for a high-street name. Silver and Gold both carry unlimited buildings and contents sums insured — no rebuild figure to guess at, no contents valuation to get wrong — and both are rated 5 stars by Defaqto on John Lewis Money's own comparison pages. Accidental damage to drains, fixed glass and sanitaryware is standard and unlimited on both, and Gold makes alternative accommodation unlimited as well.

Nobody publishes a price until you ask, so the useful yardstick is the market: the Association of British Insurers put the average combined buildings and contents premium at £375 in its 6 May 2026 release, down £22 on the year across roughly 15.5 million policies. Against that backdrop the entry-level Bronze tier is a distinctly different animal from the two above it, and the panel arrangement has consequences worth knowing about. Both are set out below.

The switch from single insurer to panel, and what it does to a quote

Until spring 2026 a John Lewis home policy meant one insurer standing behind it. Since March that year John Lewis Finance Limited has held FCA permission for insurance distribution and credit broking under firm reference 1018169, which is a broker's permission, not an insurer's. John Lewis plc sits alongside as an appointed representative under reference 416011. Both numbers are checkable on the FCA Register.

The panel went live in April 2026 with AXA, Covéa and Prestige Underwriting. Ageas was announced on 23 June 2026 and offers all three tiers. Prestige is the interesting one: it is a specialist in risks that fall outside standard acceptance criteria, which is how a broker widens the gate rather than declining people at the door. A flat above a shop, a long claims history, a home with an unusual construction — those are the cases a single-insurer arrangement tends to turn away and a four-insurer panel can often place.

Gary Davess, who runs insurance at John Lewis Money, framed the Ageas appointment as part of “a step change for our insurance business”. The same restructuring brought car insurance back in summer 2026, quoted across Ageas, AXA and Covéa on a two-tier premier and essentials split.

Bronze, Silver and Gold set against each other

The three tiers share one policy wording, which makes the differences easy to line up. On buildings, Bronze pays up to £400,000 to repair or rebuild; Silver and Gold are unlimited. On contents, Bronze caps at £50,000, Silver at £100,000 and Gold is unlimited. If your home has to be evacuated, Bronze funds £50,000 of alternative accommodation on the buildings side and £10,000 on the contents side; Silver lifts those to £100,000 and £15,000; Gold removes the ceiling on both.

Freezer contents scale the same way — £250, £500, £750 — which is a small figure that tells you a lot about where each tier sits.

The sharper split is accidental damage to drains, underground pipes, fixed glass and sanitaryware. On Silver and Gold it is standard and unlimited. On Bronze it is not there at all unless you buy the Extended accidental damage extension. A cracked soil pipe or a shattered shower screen is one of the more common household claims, so a Bronze quote that undercuts a Silver one is not comparing the same cover.

The £400,000 Bronze rebuild cap deserves a moment on its own. Rebuild cost is not market value, but on a larger family house in the South East, or anything with a period roof, it is a figure you can reach. Check yours before assuming the cheapest tier fits.

The bolt-ons, and what each one actually pays

Bicycle cover runs to £15,000 across all your bikes with a £5,000 ceiling on any single one, in the home and away from it. Student cover, for a family member living in halls or rented student accommodation in the UK or Ireland, pays up to £5,000 a claim with £1,500 on any one item; inside that sit sub-limits of £500 for bicycles, £500 for sports equipment, £500 for business equipment including a laptop used for work, £200 for cash and £1,000 for cards. Bikes have to be locked whenever they are not being ridden, and belongings must come home over the holidays.

Home emergency and legal expenses are both underwritten by ARAG Legal Expenses Insurance Company Limited, firm reference 202106, on policies starting from 1 April 2026. Legal expenses covers qualifying disputes to £100,000. ARAG runs its own claims lines — 0800 652 0259 for a home emergency, 0117 934 0416 for a legal claim — separate from the John Lewis Money support number on 0345 608 9031.

Listed buildings, seven bedrooms and £20,000 watches

Above the standard range sits Specialist Home Insurance, underwritten by Covéa Insurance plc under firm reference 202277. It is aimed at homes where contents exceed £40,000 or a single item exceeds £20,000, at listed buildings and properties built before 1800, at houses with 7 or more bedrooms, and at second and holiday homes.

The benefits are the part standard cover does not attempt. Alternative accommodation runs for up to 5 years. Rebuilding after a claim carries up to £10,000 towards solar or wind generation. Scheduled valuables can be replaced at up to 125% of the scheduled figure where an accredited valuer assessed them within the past 5 years, which is the clause that absorbs a rising gold price between valuations. Guests' belongings are covered to £10,000 in total and £500 an item, and the policy will accommodate up to 6 paying guests. After an approved claim over £20,000, Covéa contributes up to £2,500 towards leak-detection equipment. There is even £500 for a hole in one and £500 at £50 a day to hire clubs while yours are replaced.

The specialist line is reached on 0800 916 6880 rather than through the standard quote journey.

The market this policy launched into

Two free, dated sources put the cover in proportion, and neither belongs to an insurer.

The ABI's 6 May 2026 figures show home insurers paid £846 million to households in the first quarter of 2026 alone. The average household claim reached a record £6,340, up 20% year on year. Weather-related payouts averaged £6,040, a 38% jump from £4,390. Subsidence averaged £17,820. Theft claims rose 14% to £4,350. Premiums moved the other way: combined cover averaged £375, down 5%, with buildings-only at £306 and contents-only at £117.

Set the claim averages against Bronze's £50,000 contents ceiling and the case for Silver or Gold sharpens considerably.

The Financial Ombudsman Service published its 2025/26 annual data on 21 May 2026. It took 214,600 new complaints in the year. Buildings insurance produced 6,399 cases with a 38% uphold rate; contents insurance produced 1,685 with 30% upheld. Both sit at or above the 30% average across every financial product the service handles, which is a reminder that a home claim is one of the more contested things you can make.

Where the cover thins out

Bronze is the weak point of the range and it is worth naming plainly. The £400,000 rebuild cap and £50,000 contents cap are the tightest of the three, the drains, glass and sanitaryware cover has to be bought as an extra, and Bronze is not among the tiers John Lewis Money describes as 5-star Defaqto rated. Silver and Gold are.

The panel model has a flip side too. “John Lewis home insurance” is now a brand and a service wrapped around whichever of four insurers priced your risk that day. The wording is common across the panel, but the claims handling, the loss adjusters and the repair networks are not, and the quote journey does not tell you which insurer you have landed with until a price appears. Two neighbours on the same tier can have materially different claims experiences. It is also worth being clear that John Lewis carries the distribution and the brand, not the underwriting risk.

Paperwork is the third problem. The site currently hosts documents for policies starting on or after 3 September 2026, for those starting between 1 April and 3 September 2026, for pre-April-2026 policies with numbers beginning 1000, and for older Essential, Plus, Premier and Premier Select policies with numbers beginning H or J — four generations, with pre-April claims routed to 0345 608 9001 instead of the ARAG lines. Renewing customers can find the product changed under them without the branding changing at all.

Smaller catches: the older wording excludes theft and damage once a home has stood empty for more than 60 consecutive days, and the same 60-day rule applies to student accommodation; e-bikes and e-scooters are excluded from student cover outright; and single bicycles worth more than £500 need specifying rather than being assumed in.

One thing this review could not verify from John Lewis Money's own pages: cancellation charges, mid-term amendment fees and the length of the cooling-off period are not published on the site. Ask for the Terms of Business document before you buy rather than taking a figure from elsewhere.

Where it wins

  • Silver and Gold both carry unlimited buildings and contents sums insured, removing the risk of under-insuring a rebuild
  • Silver and Gold are described by John Lewis Money as 5-star Defaqto rated
  • Accidental damage to drains, fixed glass and sanitaryware is standard and unlimited on Silver and Gold
  • A four-insurer panel including a non-standard specialist means awkward risks get quoted rather than declined
  • Gold makes alternative accommodation unlimited on both the buildings and contents sides
  • A genuine high-value arm for listed, pre-1800 and seven-bedroom homes, with 5 years of alternative accommodation and 125% extended replacement on scheduled valuables

Where it falls short

  • Bronze is a noticeably thinner product: a £400,000 rebuild cap, £50,000 contents, no accidental damage to drains, glass or sanitaryware without paying extra, and no 5-star Defaqto mark
  • Which of the four panel insurers you get is not visible until a price appears, and claims handling differs between them even though the wording does not
  • Four generations of policy documentation now sit on the site, with different claims numbers depending on whether your policy number starts 1000, H or J
  • Cancellation charges, amendment fees and the cooling-off period are not published on John Lewis Money's public pages
  • John Lewis is the distributor, not the insurer — the brand you are buying does not carry the risk
  • E-bikes and e-scooters are excluded from student cover, and bikes over £500 must be specified individually

Common questions

Who underwrites John Lewis home insurance?

Since April 2026 there is no single answer. John Lewis Finance Limited is a regulated broker (FCA firm reference 1018169) and quotes across a panel of AXA, Covéa Insurance, Prestige Underwriting and, from 23 June 2026, Ageas. Specialist high-value home cover is underwritten by Covéa Insurance plc, firm reference 202277, and the home emergency and legal expenses add-ons by ARAG Legal Expenses Insurance Company Limited, firm reference 202106.

What is the difference between Bronze, Silver and Gold?

Bronze pays up to £400,000 to rebuild and covers £50,000 of contents, with £50,000 and £10,000 of alternative accommodation and £250 of freezer food. Silver lifts contents to £100,000, makes the rebuild unlimited and pays £100,000 and £15,000 of alternative accommodation with £500 of freezer food. Gold is unlimited on buildings, contents and alternative accommodation, with £750 of freezer food. Silver and Gold also include unlimited accidental damage to drains, fixed glass and sanitaryware, which Bronze charges extra for.

Does John Lewis cover a listed building or a house with seven bedrooms?

Yes, through Specialist Home Insurance underwritten by Covéa. It is designed for listed properties, homes built before 1800, houses with 7 or more bedrooms, second and holiday homes, and households where contents pass £40,000 or a single item passes £20,000. The specialist line is 0800 916 6880.

Can I insure bikes and a student's belongings on the policy?

Both are optional extensions. Bicycle cover pays up to £15,000 across all bikes with a £5,000 cap on any one, at home and away, and single bikes over £500 must be specified. Student cover pays up to £5,000 a claim with £1,500 on any one item, and includes £500 for bicycles, £500 for sports equipment, £200 for money and £1,000 for cards. E-bikes and e-scooters are excluded, and cover stops if the accommodation is empty for 60 days or more.

What happens to my existing John Lewis policy?

It depends when it started. Policies beginning 1000 predate 1 April 2026 and use an earlier wording, with claims on 0345 608 9001. Older Essential, Plus, Premier and Premier Select policies beginning H or J have their own documents again. Policies starting from 1 April 2026 sit on the Bronze, Silver and Gold wording, and a further version applies to start dates from 3 September 2026. Check which set applies to you before relying on any limit quoted here.

Our verdict

Silver and Gold are strong policies: unlimited sums insured on buildings and contents, unlimited accidental damage to drains, glass and sanitaryware, and a 5-star Defaqto mark, sitting in a market where the average household claim has just hit a record £6,340. Bronze is a different proposition and should be priced against what it leaves out rather than against the tier above. The March 2026 move to a four-insurer panel is a real gain for anyone whose home does not fit a standard box — a listed cottage, a flat over a shop, a claims history — because Prestige Underwriting exists on the panel precisely to place those. The trade is that the John Lewis name now covers four different claims operations, and you will not know which one you have until you have a quote in front of you.
